The Treasure Chest.

I Just Arted.

Because sometimes it just feels good, you know?

To feel the swish of the brush in my hand.

The tiny gurgle of water in the jar.

Fairy tale colors brought to life.

. . .

Hello, friends.

It’s a friggin’ gorgeous spring day here in southeast Pennsylvania. One baby is snoozing inside, and the other two have joined Mama on our newly-spruced-up deck.

Raja is in paradise. #sphynxlife

And Big Boy Henry is behaving himself, so rather than rearranging things to get a better photo of him, I think I’ll leave well enough alone.

We’re sharing a moment, we three.

And as I like to say quite often, I feel happy in my young heart.

I’m taking time for the things I love, and today, that’s art. Whether it’s filling in my anti-fascist coloring book, or painting little cheapy ceramic pots, I’m scratching that creative itch, yo. One little moment at a time.

Because with each passing day, I’m reminded more and more:

Now is all we have.

Two-Bit Musings.

Reasons I’m Currently Overwhelmed:

A List.

. . .

1. I’m an artist. A writer. A teacher. Feelings of paralyzed inspiration are, unfortunately, just par for the course.

2. I’m tired. While my terror-filled nightmares have made way for frustrating-scenario-type dreams in recent years, I still ain’t gettin’ much rest. Please. I just want one night without a cerebral shit-show.

3. I’ve got too many wires. Internet everywhere. Calls. Texts. Newsfeeds. Emails. Insta-whatever. Zoom meetings. How is a person expected to keep up?

4. The news.

5. Unrealistic expectations are eating my sanity. And it’s my own doing. I’m constantly judging myself. Clean the house! Exercise! Purge all of the clothes, books, and trinkets you no longer use! Post a blog! Work on your novel! Paint! Relax! Why won’t you relax, Snap?

(she blinks)

I’m trying, love.

24 hours sometimes seems like nothing at all.

. . .

SnapDragon is fresh outta sorts today.

500 and Counting, Yo.

Woah! Maybe Snap’s got something to say after all?

(she shrugs and smiles)

. . .

Hey hey hey!

I got notified by the WordPress fairies that I have over 500 followers!

I feel like a cool kid! Like the belle of the ball!

Like. . . the world is my friggin’ oyster, yo!

(whispers: “Wait . . . Who’s SnapDragon?”)

. . .

So stay tuned for more Two-Bit Musings.

More Desert Island Picks.

More treasures from the Book Nook.

More art.

More fun.

More half-witted reflections on this fumbling, bumbling experience we call life.

‘Cuz we in this together, love.

And I thank you.

Friday Night, Yo.

Brain-Dump Time.

. . .

Baby Snap called it an early night, so I decided to take advantage of a little free time while he’s snoozing away. (And before my mind completely shuts down; I tend to turn into a pumpkin around 9 PM. Or, if I’m being honest, it’s probably more like 8.)

Anyway. Onward!

. . .

SnapDragon’s Brain Dump:

  1. Loose Ends. Only two days left in February! So, I’m of course thinking of everything I want to accomplish before March hits. And mostly, it’s blog-related. Book-of-the-Month! RV Updates! C’mon, Snap! Dear Reader, I want you to know there’s not a 24-hour period that passes without the urge to post. But I refuse to settle for less, and time for prolonged creative writing has been scarce. These Brain-Dumps are as messy as I want to get.
  2. My Space.* On a related note, I have a renewed sense of pride in this site. I’m not really sure why, but I do. In a feeling not unlike teenage angst, I feel free here. It’s my space, yo. And I’m gonna decorate it anyway that I choose. I hope others enjoy it. But if not? It’s cool.
  3. Sugar & Salt. I call bullshit on all of these post-apocalyptic shows, with perfectly groomed survivors. With clear skin. Umm, no. You’re surviving on expired canned goods and Little Debbies. I go a few days without produce and my face looks like something the drain coughed up.
  4. Time Takes Time, You Know.** I’ve always been obsessed with time. I get overwhelmed at how it vanishes, seemingly before our very eyes. That’s why we have to take time for things that matter. For things that make us happy. For the planting of seeds that will bring us closer to the lives we want.
  5. An Open Book. I never want to be stubborn. I never want to be the textbook definition of a curmudgeon. I want to face each day with an open mind, and an open heart. ‘Cuz I’m so, so imperfect. And there is so, so much to learn. What a beautiful, crazy world we’re in, Dear Reader. So let us be a part of it.

On The Road: Part 1.

Take a peek at Snap’s latest RV Adventure!

. . .

Well hey there!

Thanks for stopping by, and taking a moment to live vicariously through the words of a stranger named SnapDragon. (I mean, that’s why we read anything, am I right?)

Anyway, The Sweet Husband, Baby Snap, and I are on a two-week road trip, spanning from our little nest in southeastern Pennsylvania, all the way to the Gulf Coast, and back.

We’re fairly new to the RV scene, and learning the tricks of the trade as we go.

(It’s a journey, after all!)

So let’s hop to it, shall we?

. . .

Okay. So, I should probably start by saying this first leg of the trip was a bit of a bummer, because it was soaked in rain. Like, not the kind of lazy sprinkle where you squint your eyes against a frigid, nuisance mist. I’m talking monsoon-style, buckets of rain followed us for almost six days straight. Which, of course, was super cozy when we were tucked in for the night, the constant drumming on our rooftop rocking us to sleep. But as for enjoying the sights? Well, we tried our best, yo.

. . .

Scenic Stop #1: Edisto Beach State Park in Edisto Island, South Carolina

Sadly, I don’t even have a photo from our one-night stay here. As I said, there was wicked rain. We did, however, manage to take our new electric bikes out for a brief spin, during the half-hour or so of dry weather.

(I felt the need to mention this spot, since it’s a State Park. I have a deep respect for all things publicly-owned.)

Scenic Stop #2: Lake Wateree State Park in Winnsboro, South Carolina

All right! (claps)

Check out this dreary, yet lovely scene I managed to snag. It was nice to look out at the water, even for a few minutes.

And we did see a crane-like bird moseying about! Everyone knows how excited I get about animals.

And that was the end of our stay in Wateree, yo.

Ahh. So here we got a little bit of a break in the weather.

On a search for the park office, I found myself on a very long walk. Trees such as these were all around. The damp air was quiet, and I smiled as I thought of an idea for a short story.

. . .

See? I told you this first part of the trip was perhaps a little less than blog-worthy.

But that doesn’t mean we aren’t having fun!

#family #coziness #preciousmoments #gettingoutofthehouseduringapandemic

And Part 2 promises to bring more to the table.

Stay tuned!

Just a Little Hello.

(smiles and waves)

. . .

Hello, Dear Reader.

And greetings from our Sweet-Baby Berkshire RV!

The SnapDragon Family is nearing a week on the open road, and well, it’s been a rainy one.

But that shall not dampen our spirits!

We’ve seen bits and pieces of this country—the tiniest samplings of the American southeast—and there still lies much ahead.

So let us pour an icy drink, settle the babe, and greet the stretch of highway with a smile.

Here. We. Go.

Hello, Dear Reader.

Maybe you’re a follower, or maybe you’ve stumbled upon my cauldron of creative musings and are asking yourself just what this site is all about.

What’s a SnapDragon?

I am SnapDragon, friend.

Allow me to introduce myself:

(taps the mic)

-I identify as human. I identify as a radical educator. I identify as a flawed yet compassionate soul.

-I’m obsessive about punctuation. I will fight to the death believing that it makes or breaks effective writing.

-I cannot resist cute, cartoon-y school supplies. I may be the teacher, but you better believe I’m going to buy the folder with a picture of peanut butter and jelly high-fiving on the front. Why wouldn’t I?

-I get pissed when people lack passion. I may seem like an obsessive freak about my favorite things, but at least I have personality. I’d rather be weird than boring.

-I have nighttime anxiety. If a worry seems manageable during the day, it transforms into a world catastrophe by midnight. Everything’s scarier in the dark.

-I pride myself on being forgiving. Life’s short. If you offer a sincere apology, and correct the behavior, we all good. Kids are the greatest reminder of how simple it is to just forgive and forget.

-I am embarrassingly bad at math. I truly do not know how I passed. But thankfully, all of it’s done, and I ain’t lookin’ back, yo.

-I love tattoos, but will never get one. I’m an artist, and love seeing the brilliant and meaningful designs people choose to wear on their bodies, more or less for life. But the permanence overwhelms me. I like viewing my skin as a. . . clean slate of sorts.

-I pretty much want to be Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Her voice, her hair. . . she’s absolutely lovely. But I would stay under the sea, no doubt about it.

-And finally? If I could have one super power, it would be to eat and drink without repercussions. I would be the queen of macaroni n’ cheese, vegetarian burritos, avocado and cucumber sushi, Chianti, and a ridiculous list of craft beers. Oh wait. I am, and most of the time just ignore the calories. Oh well.

Oh man. I’m hungry now.

So, there we have it, friends.

It’s nice to meet you. Or, if you’re a follower, it’s nice to take our digital relationship to the next level. (But no sexts, please. Don’t make it weird.)

So… who are you, Dear Reader?

Come on. I need some friends. So comment away! Tell me about your favorite things. Tell me what makes you you.

All of my love,
