If I were an animal. . .

If I were an animal, I’d be the biggest, fluffiest house cat of them all.
I’d curl up in a crocheted blanket and sleep the day away.
If I were an animal, I’d be a tiny mouse, savoring a morsel of the finest cheese.
If I were an animal, I’d be all of the exquisite birds:
a pelican, dipping into crystal waters;
a bluebird perching happily on the family nest;
a toucan; a flamingo; a robin.
I’d flap my wings and sing my little heart out, I would.
If I were an animal, I’d be a spider dwelling in the oldest of libraries.
I’d be a tortoise, taking my time across the desert lands.
I’d be a speckled hog rolling in mud, snorting and laughing and loving.
And if I were an animal, Dear Reader, I’d wear my blubber with pride.
I’d swing from the trees, clean my oily feathers, and pick food from my teeth without worry.
I’d smile as the sun greets me for another day.
‘Cause here we are.
And it’s another day to play.
